The slowness of this blog almost prompted me to look for other web hosts and I had begun my research. But somehow I liked the services by godaddy ( where this blog is currently hosted) and wanted to continue to use thier services. But then, the overall slowness in page loading time was almost too unbearable.
Then I stumbled across this great website – Website pingdom speed test
You have to just give your site’s URL and the site tells you how fast your website is, in terms of page load speed and also resources ( image, scripts ) that eats up page loading times

Before optimization, it took a whopping 12.26 seconds to load the home page of this blog
I quickly checked the things that were slowing the page down and identified CSS scripts being one of the major problems. Changed the wordpress them, disabled a couple of plugins and then voila !, here are the results after the optimization
